This exhibition on the other hand is about ferries, which she has been drawing since 2004. The exhibition features around the series “I SAW A LOT OF FERRIES 2004-2019” in which KYOTARO uses colors she doesn’t normally use. She has created the birth, the re-birth and the life of the ferries with expressions full of life. Viewers are lead to an illusion that they themselves are visiting the ferry land when seeing the happiness and the sorrows in the expressions of the lively ferries. 妖精たちは、柔らかく繊細な色鉛筆、水彩、アクリル絵の具を用い、色彩豊かに描き出されています。今までに無い柔和な線、全体的に淡く彩られた中に、彼女のほとばしる情熱を体感していただけることでしょう。そして、その「妖精たち」を眺めるかのように大きなキャンバスに天界の住人「シルル神」と「プレアデスの７人の姫」など、妖精の世界と共に天界の神々も展示予定です。 The ferries are very colorful, drawn using soft and delicate color pencils, watercolor and acrylic paint. The viewers will feel the passion of KYOTARO through the soft lines and faintly stained colors, unusual for the artist. Heavenly residents as Silurian God and Pleiades Princesses drawn on a great big canvas “gazing” down at these ferries will be exhibited as well. 2008年は神様を、そして今回は妖精といった目に見えないものを題材にするKYOTAROさん。彼女はこう言います。 KYOTARO who chose invisible subjects as “Gods” in 2008 and “Ferries” for 2010 says, 「神界と妖精界はまったく別次元なのですが、同じ場所に同時に存在しています。この地球にはきっとたくさんの次元が混在しているのだろうと感じてなりません。人間だけの世界ではない気がしています。この星が本当にとてつもないかたまりだということ、全ては繋がっているということ、そしてそれを忘れないためにもたくさんの人に思い出して欲しいと願い、この絵を完成させなければなりませんでした。そして、常に新しい未来に毎秒突入し続けている私たちを認識することが出来れば良いなと願います。」 “God and Ferries are on completely different dimensions but exist in the same place at the same time. This 24 piece series is constructed so that the last piece goes back to the same scene in the first piece. Instead of going back to the exact same place though, the time is forwarded just a little, in line with the progression of the story. Like drawing a spiral. The Ferries go beyond their flesh and evolve into a new dimension, are purified and connected to the heavenly world. When I first read this book, I wondered if I should read the interviews of the artists that I know first or read them in order. Was the order of the interviews intentional? まず、本書の編集についてお伺いします。私はこの本を読む時に、自分の知っている人のインタビューをはじめに読んでいこうか、それとも掲載されている順序通りに読もうかと考えました。インタビューを載せいている順序には何かあなたの意図したものがありますか？ From the beginning, when I was thinking about the interview list, Aaron Rose was on the top of the list. I think this is the same for some of the artists in this book as well, but I feel that I am here now because of Aaron and that is the reason this book was made. He introduced me to very interesting artists and also taught me to “do things by yourself”. I also met with him and talked about the book before I started the actual process. So naturally, I interviewed him first and put him at the top. As for the following order, I first thought about doing it alphabetically since Aaron starts with an “A” but I decided to put them in the order of the actual interviews I did. There isn’t any deep meaning to it, but I thought it would be a good reflecting point of my journey as well. So, there’s no special meaning to the order except for having Aaron at the top. It’s really all up to the reader where to start, weather you’re just browsing through the book or looking for a particular artist. この本のインタビューリストを考えている時からアーロン・ローズをトップにしたいと思っていました。本に登場してくる人の何人かもそうだと思うのですが、僕にとってもアーロンがいたからこそ今の自分がいると思うし、この本を作ることができたと思っているから。彼は興味深いアーティストや出来事を紹介してくれたし、『自分でやるぞ。』という事を僕に教えてくれました。本の為に動き出す前に彼に会って相談もしました。なので一番初めにアーロンにインタビューしたし、本もアーロンから始まっています。それ以降の人の順番に関しては、アーロンがAで始まるのでアルファベット順にしようかなー、とも考えたのですが、やはりインタビューした順にしました。特に意味はないのですが、インタビューの旅を振り返られるかなと思って。なのでアーロンが最初に登場している以外、登場順に意図したことはないです。それにこの本はパラパラめくって興味のある人や、作品を見て興味を持った人のページから読んでもらえるので、読む人任せ。です。 Q 2 -In the Foreword, you say, “My intentions are for you to get the general vibeｓ of these artists, not to understand everything about them.” What was the vibes you felt through the interviews? 本書の始まりにある『Foreword』の中に“彼らのすべてを理解するのではなく、雰囲気を感じられれば良いと思う”とありますが、インタビューを行ったあなたはどんな雰囲気を彼らから感じましたか？ Work Space: Mat O’Brien　 / マット・オブライアン Thomas Campbell / トーマス・キャンベル Raymond Pettibon　/ レイモンド・ペティボン I was able to feel their everyday life vibes, very much. Painters and photographers had similarities but also differences in their views. What was impressive was the fact that they were all able to do the things they really wanted to do. It was a lot of fun to see the lives of such people, and I understood their personalities and the creative works that came out of these people as well. That was the reason I went to the studios, offices and homes of the artists. 彼らの普段の生活やその雰囲気をビンビンと感じる事ができました。同じ絵描き、同じフォトグラファーでも、それぞれ考え方が違っていたり、似ているところがあったり。でも、自分がやりたいと思っていることをちゃんとやれているのがとても印象的だった。そうした彼らの生活を垣間見られるのは取材をしていて楽しかったし、そんな中から生まれてくる作品や彼らのパーソナリティーに納得できた。この本を作るのに相手の作業場、仕事場、自宅に出向いてインタビューすることにこだわったのはそのためです。 Q 3 -What do you want the readers to “get” from your book? あなたは本書の読者に何を読み取って欲しいと考えますか？ I think that each person who reads this book have different values and backgrounds and therefore will get different things out of the book, so there isn’t anything particular I want them to “get”. If they could be like, “wow, there’s so many kinds of people out there” I will be happy. Having said that, it would be nice if people could understand why I wanted to interview these artists and what I “got” from the interviews. この本を読んでくれる人もまた、さまざまな価値観やバックグラウンドがあるので人によって感じたり思ったりする事は違うと思います。だから僕は特にこう読み取って欲しいとは思っていません。へー、いろいろな人がいるんだなー。って思ってもらえたらうれしいです。とは言いながらも、僕が実際に彼らにどうして取材をしようと思ったのか、取材をして感じた事を読んでくれた人に少しでも伝えられたらいいなと思います。 In my case, when I see an artwork that I like for the first time, I wonder why this artist made that work and that makes me want to meet the person in life. That’s because there is so much you can learn from their lifestyles and backgrounds. Actually meeting the person makes that person even more intriguing and I hope that the readers will get that, even if just a little. 僕の場合、作品を初めて目にしてその作品がいいなと思うと、その作者はどうしてこんな作品を作ったんだろう？と思う事が多く、そうすると本人に会いたくなる。それは、彼らの生活やそれまで育ってきた環境などを通していろいろ知ることができるからです。会って実際に話を聞くと作品もそうですが、その人自身に魅力を感じるようになるのです。読者にそれが少しでも伝わればいいなって思っています。 Q 4 -Were there any episodes that you remember from the interviews? インタビュー中に起きたエピソードで何か思い出深いものがあれば聞かせて下さい。 There are a lot of memories –getting freezing cold or hot, car stopping on the freeway…getting an interview right before leaving. But the most memorable fact is how cooperative all the artists were. Many of them are very busy and sometimes quite loose, so it was often hard to contact them. But, they too are creators so they were all very understanding about this book that I was creating and also very cooperative. When I was interviewing, the publisher was still up in the air but because of everybody’s help I was very encouraged. Everyone, in a good-sense, is very carefree so even if I did get in touch, I didn’t know if the interview was going to happen until it did. Sometimes, they’d be like, “yeah sure, come!” and then when I actually got there, be like “oh, you’re here.” I only had limited time to stay in the US so if I couldn’t see them during my stay, I had to start from the start, so that was very difficult -meeting people as planned. It might sound like a simple thing, but…Oh, and getting the artwork from them was really hard too. “yep, I’ll send it over” and then “oops! forgot!” kind of thing. No body means any harm by it, so it doesn’t make me mad or anything, but… インタビューのアポ取りでした。みんな良い意味で適当な人たちばかりなので。連絡が取れても実際に会うまで何があるかわからないところです。「あっ、いいよ、いいよー」とか言って、実際に訪ねると「来てたんだ−」みたいな。アメリカでの滞在期間が限られているので、その間に会えないとまた一からになってしまうので。約束通りにちゃんと会う、というのが一番苦労したことです。あたりまえのように聞こえますが…。そのあとに送ってもらう作品集めの催促も大変でした。「あっ、送るよ、送るよー」、「ごめーん、送るの忘れてたー」って同じ。みんな全然悪気がないから、こっちも怒る気にもならないんですけれど。 Q 6 -I’m sure all 28 interviews in the book were very important to you, but were there any particular interviews, which were most impressive to you? What words and or actions moved you? What did you feel out of them? ・ もちろん本書に掲載されている28人のインタビュー全てがあなたにとって印象深いものであったと思います。ですがその中で特にあなたに影響を与えた人物を挙げるとすればそれは一体誰のどんな言葉や行動でしたか？また、そこからあなたはどんなことを感じましたか？ Hmmm…who would it be... I was very impressed with the fact that Giovanni Estevez understood his surroundings very well and was very responsible, more than I expected. Tommy Guerrero who gives a mellow impression from his music was still very punk and I could relate to him in a lot of ways. I’m a friend of Ari Marcopoulos, so I’ve seen his work many times and have had many conversations together, but because I knew him, I never got why I was so intrigued by his photography. But when he told me that “what’s important is not taking photos but why you are taking that photo” everything sort of made sense and that left a strong impression on me. うーん、誰だろう。ジオヴァーニ・エステベスは、僕が思っていた以上に自分の周りの出来事をちゃんと理解していて、とてもしっかりしているところが印象的でした。音楽からくる印象で穏やかなイメージのゲレロも、相変わらずパンクなところも良くて共感できるところがたくさんあった。アリ・マルコポロスとは友人で、彼の事も作品も見て話も何度も聞いてきたけれど、僕は彼本人を知っているということも含めて、彼の撮る写真にどうして惹かれるのか？という事に明確な答えがわからなかった。今回のインタビューのなかで「写真を撮ることではなく、どうして写真を撮っているのかという事が大切」と話してくれた時に彼の状況を含めて、その全てが何となくメイク・センスしたのが印象的でした。 Left　Giovanni Estevez / ジオヴァーニ・エステベス Right　Ari Marcopoulos / アリ・マルコポロス Q 7 -There is no Afterward in this book. Is there anything you would like to share in place of the Afterword? 本書には後書きがありませんね。後書きにかえて、何かやり終えた後にあなたが感じたことや話せることを聞かせて頂けますか？ There was so much that I thought about and felt through making this book and I don’t feel that there are any answers that I could give to those thoughts and feelings yet. This book is a “journal” for me and an ongoing thing, so I think that is the reason why there is no Afterword. I tried to avoid putting my opinion or point of view in the interviews, although there are some parts where I put my voice in. But, the rest of the story is told by the 28 artists. この本を作るにあたっていろいろな事を考えたり感じたりしました。それに対して僕が語れるような答えはまだないような気がします。この本は“ジャーナル”として自分の中でもまだ続いていくものなので後書きはまだないんだと思います。インタビューもなるべく僕の言いたいことや意見を含ませないように質問しています。何カ所か話の流れでちょっと語っちゃっているところもありますが。他は28人の人が話してくれているんじゃないかなと思います。 Q 8 -Lastly, this is a question that was brought up time and time in the book as well. What is your future plan? Do you plan to publish this type of book again? 最後に、本書でも度々出てきていた質問です。あなたのこれからの予定を教えて下さい。またこのような本を出版される予定などはありますか？ I asked the same question to most of the artists as well and I thought it was interesting that many of them did not have a plan or a goal. Actually, when you asked me that question, I realized that I don’t have a particular plan either. I would like to make more books if possible though. Turning ‘what he loves’ (drawing, skateboarding, books, sketchbooks) into the source of his creative disciplines, he explores his interests and talent by publishing small zines, exhibiting his artworks, or designing CD cover. He expresses his thoughts and views through drawing and painting and portraits the world with the unique interpretation. He founded an independent T- shirt label, THE LOUSY LIVINCOMPANY and designs small edition but high quality T-shirts.
