Interview to AKKO

今回のAtmosphereは、ドローイング、ペインティングを駆使しイラストレーションを中心に、雑誌、広告、舞台等の撮影用美術、ディスプレイ等も手掛けるAkko にインタビューを行いました。
消しゴムはんこ作りのワークショップやオリジナルはんこ、インクパッド、ハンカチなどのプロダクト開発を行うなど、幅広い活動の源を探りました。

Today, Atmosphere would like to feature the interview
with an artist, Akko and her numerous work, such as magazine
illustration, advertisement, set design
for theater and display designs,
workshops using her stamps made from rubber, and also her product
development.

1 /Akkoについて教えて下さい。
2004年横浜美術短期大学専攻科修了。
2006年多摩美術大学大学院グラフィックデザイン修了。
2009年よりイラストレーターとして独立。
2010年より消しゴムはんこワークショップをiiDでスタート。
大人には消しゴムはんこ作りを、子どもたちにはAkkoが制作したはんこを使った様々なアイテム作りを体験するワークショップを行っています。2012年８月からはステイショナリーブランド「Akko」をスタートしました。

趣味は
リラックス、植物観察、アロマ、朝ご飯、散歩、温泉、ストレッチ。

1/ About Akko.
After finishing Yokohama College ofArt and design in 2004, Akko did MA
graphic design course at Tama Art University.
She became freelancer in 2009 and from 2010, she started her rubber stamp workshop at iiD.
She encourage mature students to create their own rubber stamp and kids to use designed stamp she made.
From August 2012, she started her own stationary brand “Akko”.

Hobbies:
Being relaxed, observing plants,
aroma, breakfast, go for a walk,
hot spring and to do body stretch.

2 /Akkoさんは、いつから絵を書く様になりましたか？
物心ついた頃からです。
地面に木の棒で、アスファルトに石を使って、お絵かきしていました。
他にも、庭で花をすりつぶしたり、泥をこねたりして絵の具を作って、遊んでいました。
2 /When did you start to draw?
Since the day I began to understand things.
I used wood sticks for ground and stones for asphalt to draw.
I used to make my own paint using flower in the garden and mud by mashing or mixing them.

3 /Akkoさんにとって、大きな夢は何ですか？
ものすごく抽象的になりますが、
世界中の子供達と遊ぶように、ものづくりをして何かを教えてもらいながら活動していたいです。
あと、木のトンネルができるような庭が欲しい！
3 /What is your biggest dream?
It may sound abstract, but I would like to live and work as if I’m playing with kids
from all over the world. I believe that Kids can teach you a lot of things to you.
Also, one day, I want to have a garden that can make wooden tunnel.

4 /Akkoさんにとって、ワークショップやクリエイティブのアイデアを伝えて行くというのはどういう事ですか？
自分自身と相手を通じて、目醒めを体験したいのかなと。
毎回、感動があります。
私の作ったスタンプが他の人の手で使われる事で、思ってもみない作品が出来てくる。
それは相手の作品でもあるし、私自身の作品でもあってとても不思議で、
その偶然から生まれるストーリーを楽しみたい感覚です。
子供達のニコニコを充満させることも目標だけど、喜怒哀楽の何が成長に繋がるか分からないので
衝撃を加えられたらラッキー！そんな事を考えています。
もちろん大人にも！
4 /For you, what is workshop or meaning to
pass creative ideas to your audience?
Through my and the other’s creative process, I would like to experience the awareness.
Every workshop is very impressive. With the stamp I made, people make designs
I would never come up with.
It is their work as well as mine and that is the interesting point about
workshop. I would like to enjoy the coincidence that comes out of the
workshop. My goal is to make kids smile, but at the same time I believe
all factor such as delight, anger, sorrow and pleasure could be a trigger for kids
to grow up. I do think it’s lucky if I could bring their emotions out. And that is not
just for kids but for grown-ups too.

5 /Akkoさんにとって、一番記憶に残るワークショップは？
“えをかくえほん”「surpereditions 」を使って、私のハンコとインクだけで自由に、スタンプして絵本を作っていくワークショップです。
スタンプはひとつも同じように押せません、そこが魅力です。
ストーリーの中の同じシーンでも、人によって同じものにならないのが、楽しい！
ストーリーに出てくるモチーフのハンコがない場合、様々なハンコを組み合わせて、表現してくれます。

例えば、ストーリーに出てくる”お城”のハンコがなかった時に、
街並みのハンコの上に、王冠のハンコをスタンプして、お城にみたてた子がいたり、
大きく口を開けるシーンでは、食パンのハンコを歯に見立てて口を表現したり。
とっても面白かったです。

5 /What is the most memorial workshop for you?
My most memorable workshop is to create your own picture book using
supereditions (picture book with out any picture on it) and stamps I made.
The great thing about stamp is that you can never make same picture out of
same stamp. Same scenes of the book turned out to be all different by the person who makes it
and it is such a fun.

When there are no stamp motiff that are in the story then people have to use
different stamp to create the motif.
When there wasn’t any stamp of a castle, I saw a child who came out with an idea to
use a stamp of the city and put a crown stamp on it to make it look like a castle.
For the scene of opening mouth really big, kids used stamp of loaf bread as
a teeth.
It was simply fun.

6 /誰でもアーティストになれると思いますか？
なれると思います。
自分に素直に生きれたら、誰でももうアーティストだと思います。
私の母を例にすると、毎日ご飯を作る事が好きで食材を選んで、どう調理するか楽しみにしています。
それもアーティストの行動だなって思います。
しかも、ご飯を楽しみにしている家族がいるなんて更に素晴らしいです。尊敬！
6 /Do you think everyone can be an artist?
I believe so. If you could live as who you are, everyone is an artist.
My mother, for an example, she likes cooking and I am looking forward to
see what kind of material she choose and how she cooks out of it.
I do think that is also artistic activity.
The best part is that family is waiting for it. I resepect her very much!

7 /ずばり、オリジナリティーとは何だと思いますか？
誰かを喜ばせたい、何よりも自分が楽しみたい、子供のような発想を持った状態で物事を純粋に見れる事。
7 /What do you think originality is about?
To make someone happy, other than anything ones can enjoy with idea like
a child and who can see things with pure eyes.

8 /Akkoさんのお気に入りのものを3つ見せて下さい。

the most.
Bicycle, succulent plants, and Inkpad.

9 /今後、手掛けていきたいプロジェクトは？
「Akko」というステイショナリーブランドで、新作を作ること。
今はヘアサロンのイメージづくりのプロジェクトをしています。
ママと子供がリラックスして遊べる空間になる予定で、
そこには、子供達がお絵描き出来る壁を作る予定で、その壁にペインティングをしに行きます。
9 /What kinds of project do you want to
work on in the future?
To make more products for stationary brand Akko.
At the moment, I am making images for hair salon. The space will be cosy place for mom and kids to be
comfortable and fun.
We are planning on making mural kids can draw. I’m going to painting on the wall.

他にも、石川県の九谷焼の窯元「上出長右衛門窯」とコラボレーションワークショップをします。
スタンプして絵付けして、九谷焼の体験です。あとは内緒です！

I’m going to do work shop with Kutani Choemon which is Kutani pottery from
Ishwikawa district in Japan.It is to experience Kutani Pottery using stamps and drawing.

イラストレーター、グラフィックデザイナー、アーティスト 17歳で単身渡英。美大に通うかたわらCDジャケット、フライヤー、バンドT-シャツなどを作り始めたのがきっかけでフリーランスで活動を始め2010年LondonのShoreditchエリアにあるスケートボードショップで個展を行なう。
それが目に留まりCARGOの壁画を依頼される。（ここの壁はBANKSYやShepard Faireyもグラフィティを手掛けている）以降、ロンドン最大のストリートアートイベントモStreet Festモに2年連続でゲストとして参加、2011年にはLondon Film Conにライブペイントで参加。アパレルブランドへのイラスト提供、セレクトショップやヘアサロン、クラブなど多くの場所に壁画を描く。2012年、日本に帰国後東京を拠点に活動を始め原宿CANNABIS、TABLOID、gallery traxなどで展覧会を行なう。2009年　Camberwell college of arts　イラストレーション学科卒業

REPORT : Ryan Tatar Exhibition at Ron Herman Tsujido

Atmosphere is happy to announce about the photo exhibition which will be held at Ron Herman Tsujido Store. Main feature of the exhibition is photographer and surfer Ryan Tatar`s work. His photography often described as “Modern California Cool meets Vintage Hawaiian”. His melancholic yet beautiful photography catches eyes of people from world wide. この度、辻堂のRon Hermanにて行われる写真エキシビジョンの情報をお知らせいたします。今回、エキシビジョンではサンフランシスコをベースに活躍する写真家でありサーファーである Ryan Tatar(ライアン・テーター)。彼の作品はしばしば“クールでモダンなカルフォルニアにヴィンテージのハワイアンが混じった様”と敬称されます。彼のメランコリックでありながら美しい写真は世界中の人々の目にとまっています。

Ryan Tatar（ライアン・テーター）

カリフォルニア・サンフランシスコを拠点とするフォトグラファーであり、サーファー。
Sea-Tribesというタイトルで近年撮り続けているフォト・エッセイシリーズは、Ryanが日々“海や、その表面の表情、様々なサーファー達の群れ、海岸沿いの景色“などを映しています。ここ数年彼が撮り続けている写真の全てはフィルムで撮影されており、彼の写真はサーフ界を始めとして国内外の人々からの注目を集めています。
彼の写真はSurfer`s Path, Esquire, Complex,日本のBLUE MagazineやフランスのDesillusionのような雑誌に取り上げられています。また、TCSSやRake Surfboardのようなブランドからユニクロ、H＆M、Element、O`neill、PacSunやBillabongといった大きなブランドからも多数引き合いがあります。

Ryanはアメリカの五大湖のミシガン州で育ちです。小さい頃に家族で海や山へ旅行に出掛けた際、いつか海の近くに住んでみたいと思い、東海岸へと移り住み、現在ではカリフォルニアを拠点に活動しています。以来、サーフ・カルチャーやそこに開かれている道が自分の作品創りや人生において、多大な影響となり活動の主たるものになっています。

Ryanの作品は、“クールでモダンなカルフォルニアにヴィンテージのハワイアンが混じった様”だと、コラボレーションを行った人々は口を揃えて言います。サーフカルチャーを見つめる彼の独特な視点は、フィルムという媒体を通してより強調され、今の時代に撮られた写真ではなく1950年から1960年代の写真を思わせます。大概撮影する時は一人で行うのですが、地元のサーファーや偶然通りがかった人、サーフ界で尊敬されるサイラス・サットン、マイケル・ジュノ、トーマス・キャンベルのような人々など、彼が興味を引いた人々と作品作りも行います。

Ryan Tatar is a photographer and surfer currently based in San Francisco, California. His main body of work, entitled Sea-Tribes, is an ongoing photo essay “inspired by the ocean and marine layer… documenting various pods of eclectic surfers and coastal landscapes.” His photographs, all shot on
film the past several years, have brought him international attention inside and outside of
the surf world. His work and photographs have been mentioned or featured by
magazines like the Surfer’s Path, Esquire, Complex, Blue Japan, and Desillusion
France. He has collaborated with both indie labels like The Critical Slide Society and Rake
surfboards, to larger clients such as Uniqlo, H&M, O’Neill, PacSun, and Billabong.
Ryan grew up in the great lake state of Michigan in the heartland of the USA.
Family summer trips to the mountains or the sea inspired him to one day live by the
ocean. Eventually moving to the east coast and then to California, surf culture and the
open road has since inspired his life and is his principal subject matter.
“Modern California Cool meets Vintage Hawaiian” was one description used to
describe Ryan’s work during a recent collaboration. His unique view of surf
culture, augmented and enriched by the film medium, seems to fit more in the 1950s or
1960s at times rather than the current day. But his work is not fairly described as retro.
Although preferring to shoot and surf alone most times, he has worked with anyone that
interests him… shooting local surfers, unnamed passers-by, and respected surf
world icons like Cyrus Sutton, Michel Junod, and Thomas Campbell.

Kensei Yabuno 1975年、北海道生まれ。96年渡英、ロンドン芸術大学カンバーウェル・カレッジに入学。帰国後、limart、The Last Gallery、TOKYOCULTUART by BEAMSなどに作品を発表、展示。BIG ACTIVEがディレクションを担当したベックのアルバム『The Information』および、同アルバム収録のシングル曲「CELL PHONE’S DEAD」に作品を提供し、D&AD AWARD（YELLOW PENCIL）受賞。CRUE-L recordsや雑誌〈DUNE〉への作品提供、POTER、メディコムトイとのコラボモデルの発表や、コムデギャルソン2011年ＳＳレディースコレクションにて、作品がテキスタイルとして使用された。作品集として「KENSEI YABUNO」（発行：limArt）がある。

Today, we are very excited to announce a very gorgeous collaboration!  Hiroshi Iguchi, a graphic designer well-known for his creativity in the industry of music, fashion and various publications has collaborated with FABRICK®, a textile brand of MEDICOM TOY. They recently released a cool candy-motif items for daily use.

Hiroshi Iguchi:
Born in 1973, he is a graphic designerwho used to be a member of Illdozer Design team. In 2001, he started to work independently. His art work features a unique world showing close relationships between music and visuals.　He has also worked with independent labels such as Crue-L Records and Felicity as an Art director. He also collaborated with famous brand names such as TOGA, SAKIAS and STUSSY.  In 2009, a book about his collective work, “CULT JAM” by BARTA (TOKYO CULTUART by BEAMS) was published for the first time.

Born in Hokkaido in 1975. 人が自分を映し出す鏡だとしたら、コミュニケイションは最も大切なことの一つと言えます。
全ての表現は、これを無視できないからです。

彼の作品は、彼の個人的な経験と変化に” 素直に” 根ざしている様に思える。
私にとって、今の東京で目に触れる絵画表現は、本当に多様だ。
しかし正直なところ個々の作品にじっくり向かう前にフリッカの様に現象となって
パターン化したイメージが頭の中を支配する。
そんな中で彼の作品が異物の様に見えた。
作品の前に立って作品の出自、コンセプトの文脈を探るよりもパターンからはみ出た
” 素直な異物 ” に興味が湧いた。
私見だけれども、絵描きは、煩わしい人間関係や、権力も及ばない画面を
牛耳る暴君だと思う。
画面から浮き上がって前面に迫ってくる線、膨張した線の連なりが画面を
満たし奥行きを奪う。奥行きを感じとらせない画面は、線の仕業だ。
今後彼は、経験を” 素直” に反映し今迄の作品とは違う空間を孕んだ
大画面を描く事になるだろう、そこに蠢く本物もの線を操って、、、彼の作品に
密度が増し、作品の中にあらたな空間が生まれより長い時間彼の作品の中に
漂える様になる事を楽しみにしている。
今回の Calm & Punk Gallery での展示と作品集 GASBOOK27 が読者にとってそれを
予見する体験となることを強く望んでいる

の情報をお知らせ致します。

イラストレーターのGeoff McFetridgeがHeath Ceramicsの協力のもと製作した作品たちを、
ここ日本でもご覧いただけます。

タイトルは「手で考えるとき、ぼくの頭はからっぽ」。
10年にわたり独自のペースで創作し続けるGeoffの、製作に取り組む姿勢が表現されています。

陶器の作品はもちろん、原案となったドローイングやジェフのグラフィックがプリントされた
「TEMBEA」のバッグ、Landscape Productsの家具にドローイングをした作品まで。
昨年のヒースセラミックスでの展示の巡回展というだけでは無い、
新しい試みが用意された展示です。是非、ご来場ください。

Originally founded in New York, October 1978 by Valerie Mallory. Valerie Mallory was a Critic, Mother and Muse to many. Due to her deportation, the gallery was forced to close it‘s doors in January 1979.Now, decades later, The Valerie Mallory Gallery doors are once again open. These doors have been reopened by her son Viktor Mallory　*There are no actual doors just yet, as we are an online gallery.

Jay Griffin, a one time animator now self proclaimed “ Visual Athlete” after changing his name and using constant alter ego.　He photographs and paints self portraits. As his is ‘invisible’ often these portraits look like landscapes.

N.A.N uses pre existing footage and splices them into chaotic atmospheres,
His work has been described as an ‘Audio Assault and ‘ GBH to the eyeballs’.
日常の場面をつぎはぎして混沌とした世界を生み出す彼の作品は「音の攻撃、目の障害」とまで表現されている。

6: Lousie Ingalls Sturges
New York based artist.Louise is lead by an understanding of American iconography. She documents her friends, family and surrounding social landscape in an effort to preserve the now.

7: Chrissie Abbott
Illustrator, Designer U.K
Chrissie studied illustration at the London College of Communication before a three year stint designing record sleeves,but now works as a freelance illustrator. Her drawings are vividly technicolor, utilising pattern work and found images and often touching on themes of nature. Chrissy is obsessed with typography, 70s poster art and old photographs and would one day like to live by the sea.

London College of Communicationでイラストを学んだ後３年間レコードジャケットをデザインし、現在はフリーランスイラストレーターとして活動。鮮やかなテクニカラーな彼女の作品は自然をテーマとしてパターンワークやイメージ画像として用いられる。
タイポグラフィー、７０年代のポスター画や古い写真に魅了された彼女の夢は海のそばで暮らすことである。

8: Danny Sangra
Graphic Artist, Film Maker London
Danny Sangra is a multidiscipline artist who has had success both commercially and in the art world.
Sangra’s truly original pieces incorporate design, film, illustration and video/art direction, often with an iconoclastic approach. After studying graphic design at Central St Martins he went on to have solo exhibitions in London, Europe, Tokyo and New York.
Sangra has worked and collaborated with clients such as Sony BMG , Atlantic NY, Samsung, BBC, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, Marc by Jacobs, Showstudio

London based set designer, prop stylist, installation artist

Sarianne Plaisant studied fine art and Chelsea College of art in London.
She has since gone on to work with high end commercial clients alongside independent creative personal projects.
Plaisant creates installations, large and small. Intriguing the viewer with detail and a delicate balance of composition.

Robert McNally is a 29-year-old Newcastle born, Berlin-based artist.
He is blessed with a highly imaginative mind and original style.
He creates huge hyper detailed pencil drawings.
