インタラクティブデザインの分野で注目を集めるTroikaが、3月下旬にオープン予定のロンドン・ヒースロー空港の新ターミナル ‘Terminal 5’のアートインスタレーションを手がけました。
建築家Richard Rogersによる設計で話題のこのターミナルにはフラッグキャリアであるBritish Airwaysが乗り入れることが決定していますが、Artwiseのキュレーションのもと、British Airwaysはターミナル内に設置するアートワークをイギリスを拠点とする4組のアーティストに依頼。Troikaが制作したのがデジタル彫刻ともいえる この‘Cloud’ なのです。
空の旅のシンボルとも言える雲をかたどったスカルプチュアは4000を超える黒・シルバーのディスクで構成されており、プログラム制御で反転することで模様や音を作り出すという仕組み。実はこれらのディスクは70年代以降空港や駅に設置されていた出発／発車案内板で使われていたのと同様のもの。電光掲示板やモニターに取って変えられたいまも、その時代を知る人には旅のイメージを喚起するものとしてパタパタと反転する動きや音が記憶されているに違いない—そんな発想のもと選ばれた素材なのです。デジタルとアナログの両方の側面をもつTroikaらしい作品となっています。Troikaは他にも世界時計をテーマにした壁面作品 ‘All the Time in the World’も制作しています。どちらの作品もTerminal 5を訪れる方はお見逃しなく!
Troika was commissioned to design a site-specific artwork for the entrance to Heathrow Terminal 5.
The new terminal for British Airways has been designed by Richard Rogers and is due to open at the end of March. The airline commissioned 4 artists to create artwork to be placed inside the terminal, with the help of curators from Artwise.
The Troika piece is in the shape of a cloud, itself a symbol for air travel, and is covered in over 4,000 flip-dots. The flip dots can be programmed to make patterns, and are similar to those used in airport and train station departure boards since the 1970s. The sound and the movement of the flip-dots evoke a nostalgic feeling for travel that makes them a particularly suitable choice for the piece.
