数年前からにわかに始まったスーパー8ブーム。
デジカメや携帯にムービー撮影機能がつき、多くのパソコンに動画編集ソフトもバンドルされ、デジタル映像の撮影・編集はより身近で手軽になった今、なぜ8ミリフィルムなのか。今年6月の英グラストンベリーフェスティバルでも、Kate MossがCanonの8ミリカメラを持って撮影する姿が目撃されている。（もちろん被写体はボーイフレンド。カメラを手にしたKate Mossの画像はこちら。）アート学生の間で始まったスーパー8熱も、とうとうファッションセレブにまで波及しつつあるようだ。
8ミリの魅力は、ややもするとその弱点とされがちな、扱いにくさにあるのかもしれない。フィルムカートリッジという撮り直しのきかない限定的な性格からくる緊張感、独特のどこか古めかしい色感、そして撮影者の記憶と、現像から返ってきた映像の微妙なずれは、予想のつかない楽しみへと転化する。
この8ミリの魅力を凝縮したような映像イベントがStraight 8である。
1999年に始まったこのイベントはone super 8mm cartridge, no editingというサブタイトルが示す通り、
編集は一切許されずに撮影、未現像で提出されたスーパー8フィルムを現像し、イベントで上映するというものである。（撮影者さえもが、一般公開の上映会で初めてその映像を目にする。）サウンドトラックはフィルムに添えて提出され、映像技師がフィルムの1コマ目と同時にサウンドトラック音源の再生ボタンを押す。以上のようにルールは極めてアナログであり、その内容を決定づけるのは、撮影者のセンスと技術、そして偶然が生む不幸な、あるいは幸せな「アクシデント」に他ならない。カートリッジに収めることのできる3分20秒がすべてである。
最初は内輪の上映会で始まったイベントも、噂が噂を呼び、小さな映画館での上映のほか今ではイギリスChannel 4で深夜放送されたり、Kodakの協力を得たカンヌ映画祭での上映も5年目に突入している。
デジタル化が与えた写真や映像などのレンズメディアへの影響 – それを述べるにはまだ時期尚早だろう。私たちはまだその過程の渦のなかにある。しかし、デジタルメディアの登場は、アナログメディアを今一度、並列化して眺めることを可能にした。新たな技術による古いメディアの淘汰という進化の過程としてしか捉えられていなかった数々のフォーマットに、今一度再考の機会が与えられたのだ。インターネットはYoutubeに代表される映像公開の機会を生み出し、同時に私たちを情報の享受者から発信者と変えている。Straight 8は、失われつつあるフィルムメディアを基軸に展開しながらも、極めて21世紀的な側面ももつ映像イベントなのである。

JAM – You are Gifted! は香港のAllRightsReservedとD-mopがnow.com.hk上おいて展開しているTシャツプロジェクト。今年の夏はAllRightsReservedらしい16人のアーティストが参加している。同時にオリジナルボックスや、フリーペーパーなども制作されていて、かなり凝ったプロジェクトになっている（左はTシャツをいれるオリジナルボックス、右がフリーペーパー）

Documenta（ドクメンタ）といえば5年に一度ドイツのKassel市で行われる、現代美術界で最も重要な展覧会。その12回目となるDocumenta 12が現在開催中。
街中のあらゆる建物や野外スペースが展覧会場となる同展の会場ガイディンググラフィクスを担当したのはドイツ出身でパリに拠点を置くVier5（フィーア・フュンフ）。その一部が説明と共に彼らのホームページに掲載されている。http://www.vier5.de/10/documenta1.html
一般的に展覧会や美術館におけるサインシステムや展示グラフィクスは整然としたタイポグラフィーから形成されていることが多い。しかし、Vier5はあくまで彼らのスタイルでこのプロジェクトに取り組んだ模様。今年の春、Friedrichsplatz（カッセルの街、そしてDocumenta展の中心地でもある広場）で拾ったという瓶の王冠にヒントを得たサインシステムや、白い壁面に自由な筆跡で描かれた文字がとてもユニーク。綿密に計算されたコンセプトが、遊びのあるビジュアルを見事にサイングラフィクスとして成功させている。その斬新なアプローチは、常に現代美術を牽引してきたドクメンタにとてもふさわしいといえよう。

Documenta is one of the contemporary art world’s most important shows. It’s held every 5 years in Kassel, Germany. The 12th such event – Documenta 12 – is currently running. Many buildings and open spaces around Kassel have been turned into exhibition venues, turning the whole region into an exhibition space. Well-designed ‘orientation’ graphics are key in projects such as this, and Documenta have commissioned Paris based German duo Vier5 to take care of this aspect of the project. Usually, ‘map’ type graphics require straightforward, clean typography – but Vier5 have taken an idiosyncratic approach to the task, and the results are impressive. They have turned the crown cap that they found on Friedrichsplatz in spring of 2007 (in the heart of Kassel and of Documenta 12) into a key element of their design. Freehand type looks very attractive on walls, giving a highly unique feel to their creation. The playful graphics are beautifully and successfully incorporated into a superb orientation system, reinforced by the strong underlying story and concept. The result is a perfect graphic solution to the orientation system for Documenta, and is consistent with Documenta’s position at the forefront of contemporary art.

西麻布Calm & Punk Galleryにて7月20日（金）より写真展 池田晶紀＋ワタナベアニ「ふたりの上海」が開催。
Masanori Ikeda & Ani Watanabe’s photography exhibition Two photographers in Shanghai (FUTARI NO SHANGHAI) opens on Friday 20th July at Calm & Punk Gallery in Nishiazabu.

「旅するふたり」は写真家・池田晶紀とワタナベアニが一緒に旅し、同じ場所・同じ時間で感じたことを同じカメラ(MAMIYA645)を使い、写真に残すプロジェクトです。
今回ふたりが降り立ったのは、新旧の建物と原色が溢れ、今もっとも変化の激しい都市「上海」。
最高にハッピーなふつうを池田晶紀が一貫して撮り続けている子どもたちの世界と、ワタナベアニの描くサイレントな空間を通して表現します。
一緒にいても視線の先はまったく違う、ゆかいなふたり。これは背中合わせに写された、広い世界のあたらしい記念写真です。
また、2007年7月28日（土）には、池田晶紀＋ワタナベアニ両氏と、ゲストに常盤響氏を迎えたギャラリートークも開催。（要予約。入場料：1,000円。詳細はギャラリーwebサイトをご参照ください。）

Two photographers in Shanghai is the first show of the series the two travel together.
The two travel together is a project in which Masanori Ikeda and Ani Watanabe travel and take photographs together, using the same camera – a Mamiya 645.
For this project, they took a trip to Shanghai – a city that is currently experiencing radical changes, and where bright modern buildings sit happily amongst colourful classical architecture.
The two artists illustrate what they call ‘the happiest ordinary’ – Ikeda customarily looking at the world of children, and Watanabe dealing with his preferred silent spaces.
Despite the fact that they are travelling together, a delightful difference exists between the work of the two photographers. It’s a photograph and a memory, a record of a journey into the wider world.
On 28th July, there will also be a gallery talk from the two photographers, featuring special guest Hibiki Tokiwa. (Booking essential. Please refer to the gallery website for how to book.)

先月ニューヨークのThe Art Directors Clubで行われたMoleskineノートブックのエキシビション、Detour。70名のアーティスト、デザイナー、イラストレーター、文筆家による、それぞれの個性で埋め尽くされたMoleskineが展示されました。会期中NYを訪れる機会がなかった方も、そのウェブサイトにてバーチャルエキシビションとも言うべき、展示されたMoleskineのYoutube動画を見ることができます。
その顔ぶれは、ファッションデザイナーCynthia Rowley、イギリスの人気イラストレーター集団Neasden Control Centre、日本人アーティスト Shintaro Miyake、 Parsons校イラストレーション科主任のSteven Guarnaccia、スケーターコミュニティを撮り続ける写真家 Vincent Cianni、プロダクトデザイン界の重鎮Ron Arad、 Terence Conran、Spike Jonze等々。もちろんこれらはほんの一部。同じMoleskineという素材を扱うからこそ、際立って見えてくるそれぞれのキャラクターを、ウェブサイトで早速確かめてみてはいかがでしょう？

Last month, the Art Directors Club in New York ran the ‘Detour’ exhibition, a show dedicated to the famous Moleskine notebook. On display were notebooks filled with ‘notes’ from 70 artists, designers, illustrators and writers. If you missed the show, you can still check out footage on the website, which has some embedded Youtube files for viewing.
The contributors included fashion designer Cynthia Rowley, London-based illustration collective Neasden Control Centre, Japanese artist Shintaro Miyake, Steven Guarnaccia, the head of illustration at Parsons, photographer Vincent Cianni, product design legend Ron Arad, design guru Terence Conran, filmmaker Spike Jonze, and many many more!!!
