ヘルベティカ熱が止まらない。
2007年が書体Helveticaの誕生から50周年にあたることは以前の記事でも触れたが、そのお祝いムードは勢いを増しているよう。
ドキュメンタリー映画‘Helvetica&rsquoの巡回上映は世界各地でソールドアウトを記録し続け、世界で最も重要なグラフィックザイン批評家であるEllen LuptonとEmily Kingは、それぞれMetropolisとFriezeに映画のレビューを最近寄稿している。
また、同映画の監督であるGary HustwitのキュレーションによるエキシビションがパリのセレクトショップColetteで9月に行われることが決定。もはやHelveticaをみつめ直す一連の動きは、グラフィックデザイン関係者だけにとどまらない模様。
最も身近にありながら、その身近さゆえ特別な視線を浴びることのなかったこの書体に今多くの人が目を向けることは、50歳の何よりものプレゼントであろう。ドイツの書体ベンダーLinotype社はHelveticaを使ったポスターコンペHelvetica NOW開催を決定。参加を奨励し、６月中はNeue Helveticaを半額で提供するというキャンペーンも実施中。(51ウェイトを含むパックのみ。)
映画‘Helvetica&rsquoの一日も早い日本での上映が望まれる。
Helvetica fever seems to have taken over the world! We mentioned before that 2007 marked the 50th anniversary of the typeface, and the celebrations continue apace. Screenings of the ‘Helvetica’ documentary have sold out at many venues, and the film has even been reviewed by two of the industry’s most esteemed graphic design critics: Ellen Lupton and Emily King. Lupton’s review was written for Metropolis and King’s piece appeared in Frieze.
Ubercool Paris boutique Colette is putting on a Helvetica exhibition in September, to be curated by Gary Huswit (the director of the Helvetica documentary). Everyone seems to be caught in the whirlwind of the typeface’s anniversary celebrations, not just fans of graphic design.
All this excitement around Helvetica’s 50th anniversary makes a lovely birthday present for the typeface. Although Helvetica’s quality and popularity have made it a ubiquitous type font in the graphic design industry, it’s nice to know it is getting its place in the limelight.
Furthermore, Linotype are now running a poster contest called Helvetica NOW to add to the celebrations.
We sincerely hope ‘Helvetica’ is screened in Japan soon!

6月22日からオランダ・アイントホーフェンのギャラリーMUにて、Geoff McFetridge “Bend the Void”展が開催中です。今展は10年以上に渡りロサンゼルスをベースに最先端のカルチャーにアートワークを提供し続けてきたGeoff McFetridgeのオランダでの初の大きなソロエキシビションとなります。
展覧会のオープンと同時にスイスのインディペンデントパブリッシャーNievesからは2冊目となる冊子“Bend the Void” がリリースされました。

Geoff McFetridge‘s exhibition “Bend the Void” is now being held at MU in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. LA-based designer & artist McFetridge has been at the forefront of the arts scene for over 10 years, and this is his first large solo exhibition in Holland.

ニューヨークのパーソンズ、ロンドンのセントラルセントマーティンズとともに世界3大ファッションスクールの一つに数えられるベルギーのアントワープ王立芸術アカデミー。6/14から3日間に渡り、ファッション科の学年末・卒業ショーが開催中。最終学年だけでなく、１年生から４年生まで全ての学生がキャットウォークショーを行うことが同校の大きな特徴の一つ。厳しい進級審査をパスし、2007年度の最終学年に残ったのは14名。そのコレクションをウェブサイトにてチェックすることができます。キャットウォークの画像もショーが終わり次第アップされる予定。そして今年も最終学年の学生たちの作品を収めたカタログが発売。『Atmosphere 02』で紹介したPaul Boudensも制作に関わっています。世界のファッション界が注目する新たな才能の新鮮なコレクションを、早速チェックしてみてはいかがでしょう？

Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts is considered to be one of the ‘world’s top three fashion academies’ – the other two being NY’s Parsons and London’s Central Saint Martins. This year’s end-of-year/graduation fashion shows were held from 14th – 16th June.
The end of year catwalk shows traditionally showcase not only final year work, but work from students at every stage of the degree program.
14 students have made it through the tough selection process to survive into the fourth and final year. Their work can be seen on the Academy’s website, which will also soon be showing photos of the end of year event.
A catalogue featuring the graduates is available, and we’re happy to note that the team responsible for this publication includes Paul Boudens, who was featured in our ‘Atmosphere 02′. Have a look and be one of the first to check out the hottest talents in fashion!

The city of Antwerp in Belgium undoubtedly leads the world in fashion trends. ‘A Magazine’ is published twice a year from the editorial team’s base at ModeNatie, at the heart of the city’s fashion scene. And now, the details of the long-awaited 5th issue have been revealed.
The magazine is known for its format of inviting particular fashion designers to ‘curate’ each issue, using contributions from related artists. The curator chosen for this new issue is Martine Sitbon. The magazine will document the progress of the fashion designer’s recent challenge, launching her new label ‘Rue du Mail designed by Martine Sitbon’.
Contributors include Julie Verhoeven, Anette Messager, Sofia Coppola, Cedric Rivrain, Craig McDean, Beck, and Nick Knight. We look forward to another beautiful issue from ‘A Magazine.’

Dazed digital, Dazed & Confused magazine’s website, has been running various projects recently in its search for new talent. The site is currently offering photographers and illustrators the opportunity to take part in a group exhibition in Europe, as part of the Wrangler Thisiswanted events.
The brief for the project is stated in the website, and submissions can be made through the site’s “submit” section. Chosen artists will get the opportunity to show their work in the exhibition, which is touring Barcelona, Milan and Stockholm. Also, everyday thoughout June they will highlight one artist on thisiswanted.eu and dazeddigital.com.

近年、鳥をモチーフにしたペインティングを多数発表してきたアーティストの遠山敦さんが、久しぶりにドローイングの作品集『Bird Book』をリリースします。全て書き下ろしの新作で、96ページ全て鳥のドローイングだとのこと。
遠山さんの自由な感性で描かれる鳥たちは一体どんなかたちになるのでしょう？是非手に取ってご覧下さい！

In recent years, Atsushi Toyama has produced many paintings of birds. Now, Toyama is releasing a new book, entitled ‘Bird Book’. All the pieces contained in this 96-page publication are new drawings.
You’ll be able to see for yourself what the birds of Toyama’s imagination look like by checking out the book, which will be available from Utrecht in mid-June.
The artist has also started a regular column on the Public-Image website, under the name of WAKU WAKU RAKUGAKids!!, where, with the help of his 3-year-old daughter, he explores modern art history and the possibilities for art in the future.

英国ブライトン発のイラストレーション＆グラフィックマガジン、‘If you could do anything tomorrow – what would it be? ’の第二号の発売が7月5日に決定しました。第一号と同じく、タイトル、‘If you could…’（もし明日何でもできるなら、それは何？）をテーマとして、公募で選ばれたアーティストと、著名アーティストによる作品を収録。GAS BOOKでもおなじみのGenevieve GaucklerやJasper Goodall (BIG ACTIVE)、そしてMark Pawson、Paul Davis、Alex Rich、Ken Garlandなどの人気イラストレーター・デザイナーに加え、昨年Keane『UNDER THE IRON SEA』のアートワークで一躍その名を馳せたSanna Annukka、Dazed & Confusedなどで活躍するPeter James Fieldなどの注目の若手イラストレーターも参加。

The second issue of ‘If you could do anything tomorrow, what would it be?’ will be released on July 5th!
The 160-page full-colour graphic/illustration publication from the UK seaside town of Brighton will include work from some new talents, discovered through the title’s open submission policy, as well as work from some more well-known names.
Contributions answer the question ‘’If you could do anything tomorrow, what would it be?”
Amongst the participants are Gas book artists Genevieve Gauckler and Jasper Goodall (BIG ACTIVE) as well as other popular artists/designers including Mark Pawson,Paul Davis,Alex Rich and Ken Garland.
Also providing pieces for the publication are Sanna Annukka, who shot to fame last year with the artwork for Keane’s ‘Under the Iron Sea’ album, and emerging illustrator Peter James Field.
