20世紀を代表する書体Helvetica。今年2007年は、その誕生から50年目にあたります。
その誕生を祝うべく制作、そして3月のプレミア上映を皮切りに世界で巡回上映されているのがドキュメンタリー映画 “Helvetica” A Documentary Film by Gary Hustwit。カメラはアメリカとヨーロッパ6カ国を旅しながら、著名デザイナー、批評家たちのインタビューを交えつつ、人々の日常にあふれる書体Helveticaに新たなまなざしを向けます。インタビューに答えるのは、Erik Spiekermann, Matthew Carter, Wim Crouwel, Hermann Zapf, Neville Brody, Stefan Sagmeister, Michael Bierut, David Carson, Paula Scher, Jonathan Hoefler, Experimental Jetset, Norm, Alfred Hoffmann, Rick Poynor, Lars Müller等をはじめとする豪華な顔ぶれ。今後東京での上映も予定されているとのことですが、現在詳細は未定の模様。

また、現在ニューヨークのMoMAでは展覧会 “50 Years of Helvetica”が開催中。今回新たにLars MüllerからMoMAへ寄贈されたという誕生当時オリジナルの金属活字をはじめ、歴史的印刷物やサイン、Experimental JetsetデザインのTシャツ等の展示のほか、上記の“Helvetica” のダイジェスト版ビデオ上映も。

2007 marks the 50th anniversary of the Helvetica typeface, one of the most widely embraced typefaces of the 20th century.
To coincide with this anniversary, the first ever feature length film about the ‘Helvetica’ typeface has been made, and it had its premiere at the SXSW Film Festival in March. The film is now screening at film festivals and events worldwide. The film was shot on location in the US and Europe, and looks at the typeface in everyday life with a fresh eye. Interviewees include Erik Spiekermann, Matthew Carter, Wim Crouwel, Hermann Zapf, Neville Brody, Stefan Sagmeister, Michael Bierut, David Carson, Paula Scher, Jonathan Hoefler, Experimental Jetset, Norm, Alfred Hoffmann, Rick Poynor, Lars Müller and many more (the dates for screening in Tokyo are yet to be announced.)

New York’s MoMA is currently running a “50 Years of Helvetica” exhibition. On display are an original lead Helvetica type font donated by Lars Müller, some historical prints, posters & signs, and a T-shirt from Experimental Jetset, amongst other related material. The museum is also showing excerpts from Gary Hustwit’s Helvetica documentary.

いつも新作が出るたびに音はもちろん、そのビジュアルが注目されているアーティスト、Björk。そのBjörkが5月7日、前作の『Medulla』以来3年ぶりにニューアルバム『Volta』をリリースしましたが、今作もそのビジュアル作りに携わった人達はいつものメンバーながら超豪華。
ジャケットは、アートディレクションとデザインをM/M(Paris)が、フォトグラフィーをニック・ナイトが、スカルプチャー制作をベルンハルト・ウィルヘルムが手掛けました。
中身のビジュアルは売れっ子フォトグラファーデュオ、イネス・ヴァン・ラムスエードとヴィノード・マタディンが手掛けており、炎がよく見ると「VOLTA」と読めるようになっています。

そして今回『Atmosphere 04』でロングインタビューをしたニック・ナイトの主催するSHOWstudioではこのアルバムリリースに伴い面白いプロジェクトを試みました。

SHOWstudioのサイトからこのジャケットビジュアルの1.1×1.9mの巨大ポスターが48分割されたA4サイズ（またはUSレターサイズ）の高解像度データが毎日ランダムに1コマづつダウンロードでき、自分でパズルのように組み立ててビジュアルを作り上げます。（ダウンロードにはログインが必要）
※実際に画像があるコマは34コマで、34コマをダウンロードしたら余白の14コマをまとめてダウンロードして完成させます。
このプロジェクトはリリース前の4月12日から始まったもので、まだ公開されていないBjörkの新作ビジュアルの断片を毎日つなぎ合わせていき、リリース日の5月7日にビジュアル（しかも巨大ポスター）が完成する、というもの。
他にもSHOWstudioでは常に様々な情報や画像を配信し、インターネットを使った新しい試みにも日々チャレンジしています。

Björk never fails to surprise us with each new record, not only with her sound but also with her visual imagery. Her latest album ‘Volta’ came out on the 7th of May, 3 years after the previous LP ‘Medulla,’ and yet again she has come up with something astonishing, different and new.
The top artists gathered together to create the cover images for her latest release included M/M(Paris), responsible for art direction, the photographer Nick Knight and sculpture from Bernhard Willhelm. The liner images and fire letters were photographed by Innez Van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin.

Celebrating the release of the album, Nick Knight’s SHOWstudio is now offering a ‘special download jigsaw,’ which can be downloaded and printed out. The ‘jigsaw’ is composed of 48 pieces, 34 of which have images on them, and 14 of which have been left blank. The idea is that the segments are to be downloaded individually, over a period of 48 days, with one piece available per day. Don’t worry about missing any days, once you begin downloading, the site will offer you the next piece in the sequence automatically. There is no clue as to the original image, and it is up to you to create your own composite picture from the puzzle. This is one of many playful online experiments from SHOWstudio, so keep checking their website for more fun.

The latest issue of German culture magazine, LODOWN has been released. LODOWN continues to collaborate with creative teams from around the globe for each issue in 2007.
This issue’s collaboration is German design duo : PAZE & SMAL – the visualists who create an entire image of Gomma records based in Munich.

また、LODOWNの創始者であり創刊からずっとアートディレクターを勤めてきたMarokは昨年アートディレクターを退任しましたが、現在はクリエイティブディレクターという形で関わっており、LODOWNはまだまだ彼の元で動かされているようです。
そして何やら今は、新しいプロジェクトとして昨年からあたためていたコンセプチュアルな作品集作りに励んでいるとか。コンテンツが出来上がり、もうすぐ印刷に入るとの事で、リリースの日は近いようです。
LODOWN共々、Marokの今後の新たな活躍にも要注目です！
Marok, a founder of LODOWN magazine, has been an art director since the first launch. He retired as an art director last year, but now still be working as a creative director. It seems LODOWN is still under his control. 
And now, we heard he is currently focusing on developing conceptual art book. He’s been working on this from last year as a new project.  It seems to be released in the near future since the contents are ready, and the printing job will be started very soon. 
You can’t keep your eyes off LODOWN and Marok’s future works!
